MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A Bartlett man found thousands of dollars inside an item he bought on ebay.

James Labrecque sold an old safe on ebay for $122.93.

"I made a mistake, you know, that's what it boils down to," said Labrecque. "And it cost me dearly."

Labrecque, an ebay user for more than 15 years, said he did not have the combination to the safe and believed it to be just another item to turn around.

"I thought it was empty," he said. "I shook it and I didn't feel anything inside of it, so I figured, well, maybe it's just a locked safe, you know. So I put it on ebay."

Labrecque lives in California. The person who bought the safe lives in Bartlett. Upon receipt, the buyer brought the safe to a welder, who cut it open.

Inside the safe was $26,000 in cash.

The buyer gave Labrecque a positive review and shared the news.

At least the seller didn't get negative feedback.

I don't think he found it at all. Funny how the amount went up 20K from feedback to news.

Maybe the buyer isn't playing a joke and is just saying it was a joke, since he doesn't want the publicity and the IRS on his back?

And why would the seller think shaking a very heavy safe, would reveal the contents? Paper money wouldn't just bounce around, if it was packed in tightly.

And I wouldn't return the cash either, since the seller said all sales are final. Since the seller is greedy and didn't want to lose his $122, then he shouldn't get anything else either. The seller was plain greedy and thought he could sell a useless and empty safe.

Who sells a locked safe without checking it first? Who buys a locked safe without being able to open it? What would be the purpose of buying a locked safe, knowing you couldn't open it, and taking it to a welder to torch it open, thus ruining the safe forever, on the possibility that it will contain untold riches? How does torching open a safe not destroy currency inside?

The whole story smells bad fish.
Rest in Peace

Article updated, reflecting what bobby131313 found:

(WMC-TV) - UPDATE: The seller has added a new comment to his feedback page claiming that the buyer never found any money:

"He was playing a practical joke the safe was empty there wasnt any money in it."

A rather odd story indeed.

I think there was no money in it at all, I doubt he is back peddling. It just doesn't make any sense as Silvereye said above. I have seen people take a welding torch/cutting tool to a safe that had paper items in it and they were torched as well inside the safe, so I really doubt this ever happened. This is on top of the amount keeps changing from $6000.00 all the way up to $26000.00 really makes me doubt the whole thing. Not to mention it isn't the buyer that the news group was talking to, they tried to track them down and couldn't, so I doubt the stories would change because they are scared of the IRS because it never mentioned who it was
