i received a 1855 liberty head 21/2D as a gift, the values appear to vary tremendously based on grade; how can I determine what grade mine is

Welcome lbo! We would need a picture of both sides of your coin to evaluate grade/value.

picture were not clear, this is a scan of both sides; actual coing is not as "dull" as scan but you can see detail at least

Your coin looks nice considering it was scanned. I'd guess it would grade AU (About Uncirculated).

Value estimate would be $250 to $300. If it did grade at the high end of the AU scale, like AU58 and problem-free, then it could go up to $350.

Anywhere near Goldsboro? My nephew is at Seymour Johnson AFB and would happy to help. If you want to send me a message, I can put you in contact with him.

Most dealers wouldn't offer much over melt price ($208) and your coin is worth more than that. Selling it raw you should get $250 minimum. I don't think it's worth grading unless it is AU+ and I can't tell that for sure from the scans.

Best of luck!

At a worst case scenario, my guess would be AU55..
I agree with BH1964, not much beyond melt from a dealer.
It's a good looking coin.

Yes, AU 50/55. This is collector quality and should not be sold as bullion.
