Two more coins I picked up from that junkshop at 10p each.

1c - 28.4mm 10g, 5c - 21.3mm 5g.

I would welcome any comments on their history or design, because that sort of thing intrigues me.

They had a box of mixed old coins at 10p each, so I bought a handful of what looked most interesting. Now I am looking at coins with new eyes, I am going back for a bucket-load...

The cent is known as as a Coronet Head (or Matron Head) cent. http://www.coincommunity.com/us_lar...ron_head.asp

The nickel is known as a Liberty or "V" nickel. http://www.coincommunity.com/us_nic...y_head_v.asp

CCF has some good info on pretty much any U.S. coinage. Look to the left and click on "US Coin Facts". Other than that any simple google search should yield a lot of info since you now know what you are looking at. Sharp coins!

What else could 10p buy?
Both are good "cherry pics" for the price.
That 5 cent piece has nice denticles [detail around the edges]
You have a good eye. Keep up the good work.

The large cent is a common date and gradewise is About Good to Good. Retail value is probably at least $5 and many collectors would likely be interested at $10 USD. It doesn't appear to have any "problems" other than wear.

The nickel would grade Very Good and is worth a buck or two. Color looks pale which could mean it's been cleaned but not harshly.

I think a bucketful of coins like this would be an excellent investment!

Hello Anaxi (from the other side of the pond):

Your US Large Cent is the common of the three varieties for that date. The diagnostics are on the obverse the sixth star is to the right of the coronet tip. On the reverse the last "A" in America is close to the stem.

It is an N.3 in AG condition.

Very nice find for a fantastic price. Put it in the CCF auction so it can be repatriated with its homeland.

I noticed your post stated "For your enjoyment". I agree, for YOUR enjoyment, not mine. I would enjoy those if you sent them to me though. Those Large Cents are really growing in popularity and costs around me. Not sure how those got over there but might be one of the reasons I'm having so much trouble find some for myself. Nice find.
