Thought some modern US commem collectors might find the following of interest...
Back in 1993, the American Numismatic Association (
ANA) and the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation (JMMFF) teamed up and secured a quantity of the 1993 Bill of Rights commemorative half dollar. They then contracted with a private firm to shave a portion of the reeded edge on each coin and then stamp them with a unique serial number and the initials "JMMFF" and "
ANA". The altered coins were then sold in specially designed holders under the name "The Freedom Pack" -- a quantity of 9,656 is reported.
It was surprising to many collectors that the
ANA would sponsor the altering of a US coin so that it could resell it as a fund raiser. Noted numismatist and author Q. David Bowers said at the time that "saints as well as scoundrels" have been part of the history of US commemorative coins, and opined that the Freedom Pack issue "goes into the 'scoundrel' category."
Either way, the sets were somewhat popular at the time, their limited sales period (28 July 1993 to 15 October 1993) added to their allure. I bought two at that year's
ANA Convention.
Here's what they look like, Happy Hunting!
