Hello!

I have just bought some silver Morgan dollar and their thickness is 3,1 mm. I have read on several websites that the thickness should be 2,4 mm but I have also seen other websites selling Morgan dollar with a thickness of 3,1 mm like *** Edited by Staff - Please Review the rules that you agreed to when you registered. ***
so I am confused ! so is there one official thickness for Morgan dollars ? Thanks for your help

I just mic'd one and it said it was 2.76mm thick, so I think 3.1 may be in specs. I have never measured ones thickness before until just not but I believe 3.1 should be alright. I don't know if the date matters or not but the one I measured was a 1878-S

Welcome to Coin Community, jacques. My guess is both numbers are correct - 3.1mm at the rim, and 2.4mm field thickness.

The problem is that the concept of "thickness", when applied to an item whose thickness varies at any point you choose to measure, doesn't make much sense. If a thickness is specified at all it will be that of the strip or blanks, not the planchets or finished coins.

I've asked that question about all coins in the past.
Never have gotten an answer.
