@levitron, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes that definitely looks fake to me. You could compare your piece against a known real '99 Dollar such as this one:

Your pictured coin is fake and probably has Chinese origins.

It makes it easy to spot how off it is when an authentic CoinFacts photo is laid side-by-side to a questionable one.

Just look at the shapes of the interior loops of the 9s when comparing each coin: ovals vs. circles Plus the position of the entire data is way off.

Let us know the weight of your coin and what they wanted for it.

They wanted $ 2000 and the weight was about 26.7

One-look fake, the date is usually the giveaway.

Another very easy to see, once pointed out, key to identifying these fakes is how well the rims and rim denticals are formed on the fake ones. The originals did not have near the crisp definition of the denticals and also were lacking in the precise uniformity seen on so many of the fakes. Yours would make a nice belt buckle though

I often wonder about the people who produce these fake coins. Obviously they have the artistic talent to produce a somewhat reasonable facsimile of a coin--why don't they go one step further and make a fake that is a spot-on match to a real one?

The date is wrong, the font is wrong, the stars are wrong, the denticals are wrong, the bust is too small and the weight is wrong. About the only thing the got right is that it is round.
