Hello from your neighbor just south of your border near Niagara Falls, NY (and Ontario!)

As you can imagine, we get a lot of patronage from Canadian folks at the Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga and the Outlet Mall in Niagara Falls...

Just wondering, what is the best book for Canadian coins (roll searching, and scoring random change from retailers)? Does the equivalent of a Whitmans Red Book (retail sale prices) for Canadian coins exist? Also, is there a semi-stable pricing structure as laid out in our Red Book? I heard Canadian coins are volatile in value...so are there cycles I can exploit to find good values from dealers?

Can anybody sum this up for me in both a theoretical AND in-practice boots on the ground perspective?
I did do a search on the forum first, but it was cursory...at best!

Please help any way you can! Thanks!

War Nickel,

The tried and true Canadian book is the Charlton Standard Catalog of Canadian Coins. It is structured in similar fashion to the Red Book, by denomination and then date. They will issue annually and 67 edition will come out sometime year. There are several others but this is the benchmark. It is soft cover, spiral bound so it lays flat. Illustration are B&W.

Whitman issues it's 1st edition of a Guide Book to Canadian Coins and Tokens. It is hard cover with color illustrations. The pricing structure in general is a bit lower than that found in Charlton. It is well constructed in the typical Whitman fashion. There are editing issues that will probably get ironed out in the next few editions as they tighten it up.

If you want the tried and true, go with Charlton. If you like Whitman and the US Red Book, then go with their offering.

As for the market in Canadian being more volatile than for US coins. I don't think that's the case. Both have suffered a dip the last few year on common date, common grade coins. Problem free keys, grade rarity coins, certain varieties continue to command strong prices, same as the US.

The one thing you will find is that the Canadian material is generally less expensive than the US coins.

Both are avail

Whitman offers an equivalnet

@Dan- Thanks for the speedy reply-Charleton! Considering I would buy coins in Canada, I will likely go with the Charleton...
Please clarify what you mean by "Canadian material is generally less expensive"...you mean Canadian coins of the same vintage and rarity (if it is ever possible to draw such a comparison!) would generally cost a bit less than American coins? If so, I should head north sooner than later!
