Does anyone know where Gaul Mint was? My Tetricus with LAETITIA AVGG N that I posted in JW's thread is RIC 90 var, and the mint of that attribution is Gaul Mint. Was it Trier? Or Cologne?

My vote is on Lugdunum, the capital of Celtic Gaul under Agrippa.

Which mints were in operation in Gaul at the time of Tetricus? That would narrow down the vote option.

I'd say Lugdunum (Lyon) also. Do you have a picture of the coin?

I'm not an expert on this, but I believe I've read where there were two known mints used for the Gallic Emperors, Cologne and Trier. But I've also read that Trier was not minting for these usurpers. Also the Virtus coin I posted on the other thread is identified as having been minted at "a Southern mint". There has been some speculation that some of these coins were struck at Mediolanum, but that has been disputed.

Lugdunum was not active at this time. WHilst RIC quotes coins of Postumus as coming from Lugdunum it wasn't active during his time either.

The latest thinking on the mints for this period of the Gallic empire have been documented here:-

Follow the link to the Tetricii...

That's interesting--there must have been a strategic reason for the capital of the Gallic Empire to be so near the Rhine border.

Thanks guys for the help so far. Kind of weird how they are vague when it comes to the mints of these Gallic coins.

With the capital near hostile land, it would put more emphasis on defending the border? IDK that's my guess.

It depends on your source, but as JW states Cologne, Trier were the mints used. I have also read that a mint at Bordeaux was used.

That's more than likely one of the reasons Constantine I moved the capital to Byzantium, becoming Constantinopolis.
