While looking for the 89 reverse, I looked back at front again because it had an "X" above the date, almost even with Abe's naose. My original thought was somebody did a counterstamp. But after grabbing my loupe because something caught my eye. I can see metal (copper) rounded off and built up a little like you see in a Cud right where the 2 lines intersect to create the "X". I see no damage to the plating. No flaking or bumps. And, the reverse shows no sign of a "post mint" stamp job. I see no marks on the reverse.

Is it possible to have a stamp pre-plating?

Any thoughts before I get the pic up tomorrow?

I found a Mississippi counterstamp in the same bag. Looks totally different.

Without an image it would be hard to guess what you have.

I was talking about at the intersection of the "X" it looks like rounded up metal like in a Cud. I didn't think a post mint stamp could make the metal round up.

It could have been stamped with two "V's"?
Rest in Peace

Looks like a "V" stamp that has a small chip missing on the inside point.
Sorry,I mean a "V" punch.
