I Attended an Estate Auction this past weekend with a friend looking for some furnature. Insie a box on the table was a plastic coin sheet containing 8 silver dollars. I inquired as to their price. The lady sid 20 $. I knew they were worth at least 5 dollars each just for the silver content so I bought them. I drop dead gorgious lady came into the room and my attention was shifted in her direction. I slipped the coins into my pocket and forgot about them. Today I tried to determine their approx. worth and was unable to figure out a particular one. Any help is appreciated.

A 1797 sitting Liberty Silver Dollar. It is marked 420 grains 900 fine with a CC mint stamp. It is a Trade dollar. Now that's where I get so confused !

I researched Trade dollars and the references all seem to state they dated back to about 1850. Mine goes back 50 years before any record I can find. Can anyone explain this to me in Newb language ?

D.D.,
Trade dollars were minted from 1873-1885 so its not very possible their from that era.The Trade dollar was also highly "copied".So if you could post some pictures we could give you more information.

Yes it does sound like a counterfeit. Still if the other seven are genuine and you paid $20 for the lot, you have a real bargain there.

If one of them is an impossible fake, chances are the rest are fake too. Can you post pictures?

Welcome DollarDumb !!!

The 1797 is a definite fake or fantasy "coin" although it might actually be silver. Love to see photos of all of them if you get a chance.

all the information that has been given is correct, these Trade dollars are one of the most copied in china and ebay is littered with cast copies of them all over the place. The date yours has is the first giveaway that yours isn't real but some others are pretty deceptive and if you don't know what to look for you can really get taken for a very expensive ride. 20 dollars is a pretty cheap lesson and even the cast copies on the streets of china sell for about 5.00 a piece. Chances are it has absolutely no silver content in the coin at all (I am not sure what most cast copies did have in them but a member swamperbob would know exactly what they are made of). I would try to post some pictures of the coin because color and other giveaways could tell about how it was made and maybe even what its made of and then we may be able to help you further

The seller probably knew exactly what she was doing.
