I'm trying to fill in the four blank pukas at the end of my Dansco Buffalo album and just got this coin in. I have a Gem BU 38D/D and wanted a 38D/S to go along with it. The coin arrived today but I can't really match it to the classic 38D/S. It doesn't match my D/D either. All help would be greatly appreciated. Paleoguy

I can say that it is definitely NOT a D over S.
I zoomed in on your already nice image and I see a distinct D over another just west of it.
Possibly there is even a faint 3rd D below the two to the south,

The Mint Mark(s) looks flat instead of rounded on the edges. I would lean towards shift doubling...but the wouldn't FIVE CENTS have similar characteristics?

I agree that it's not a D/S.

Check out what PCGS says about D/D;

It looks similar to the D over D on the PCGS page doesn't it? I can't say for sure.

To quote the Ron Guth comment on that page:

Quote:
The 1938-D/D Buffalo nickel is a common, but popular, variety. The mintmark shows clear doubling from having been punched into the die twice. Mint State examples are available by the thousands, often in Gem condition. The finest examples certified by PCGS (as of February 2012) include 60 MS-67s.

Thanks for all the input. I agree completely that it's not a D/S, but it bears no resemblance to my GEM D/D. I have a strong opinion that there are three "D's" in the mint mark. One West and one South East of the primary MM.
