Just got a Fuji Finepix S5600 the other day. Not for coins but for this comet that's buzzing around. As it turns out the camera is lousy for the comet, I was starting to think I blew me money but oh boy is it fantastic for coins!

Using a copy stand, just ordinary room fluro light and held an icecream container between the light and the coins to soften it. Also had on a 4x closeup lens. The Fuji has a 55mm threaded lens for all sorts of goodies. White ballance setting was set to the 3rd fluro setting, ISO 200, F5, ummm I forget the rest.

Must go take more photos. This camera is fun!

Those are simply gorgeous!

If you drop it to ISO 100 (if you can), it will allow more light, which will in turn allow a shorter exposure or smaller aperture (increasing depth of field), and you might even improve upon what you've got.

It won't be easy to improve on these, though.

You must mean ISO 400. ISO 100 would do the opposite. This camera goes noisy at ISO 400 and higher. But yes I do need to stop the lens down a bit more yet, possibly to F8 to reduce the chromatic aberration caused by the el cheapo close up lens. It's not a doublet. Longer exposure needed.

Here's a small half sovereign and a large 2oz silver Kooka. Both behind plastic.

Edit, oops called the 2005 Kooka a 2006 in the filename. Oh well doesn't matter.

Funny how very shiny silvers go reverse or negative isn't it.

Um, yes, of course, you're correct. My apologies for the blonde moment.

So how did you light the 2005 Kookaburra? I have a 2007, and it's giving me fits trying to capture contours in the obverse "proof" parts.

Yes it's not an easy one to photograph. All the coin photos in this thread are lit the same way. A big 36 watt fluro light on the ceiling at about 30 degrees angle to the coin and diffused through a white 2L icecream container lid about a foot away from the coin.

The lid probably blocks most of the light and I guess the coin is getting lit as much by room reflections as by diffused light. The light level reaching the coin is quite low, and needs a slow shutter fired by self timer to reduce blur from pressing the shutter button.

WOW, I'm speechless.

Could you describe your system a little. From what distance do you shoot the photos, how distant is your ice cream cup filter etc.

I have a Kodak Easyshare C643 and my best coin photo ever would be this one:

Thanks RenaL. Those pics of your ASE's are very good.

I'll attach a couple of pics of the camera on the stand and the distance I use to focus the coin. It's a fair way from the coin (about a foot) and use the camera's zoom to get a close view. I also use a 4X close up lens that just screws into the Fuji's main lens, sometimes I stack a 4X and 2X.

I've discovered my hand blocking some of the direct light works as well as the icecream lid. However some pictures looked really washed out and lack depth so I'm experimenting with different light angles.

Thanks for this post, Learjet. You have boosted my confidence in my camera, I also have a S5600. The pics I get are reasonable, but a friend who is a photographer told me to get some dipoters (close up lenses), so I guess I will have to buy them now.

Great pics, mate.

Thank for the pics LearJet,

I just didn't get where you place the icecream lid. Close to the coin?

And one more thing; how's the cat helping with the coin pics? Do I need to get one

Icecream lid was further away from the coin than the lens, about the distance of the back of the camera.

Yes cat is very important. Cat has to be white. Light bounces from fluro off cat to coin.
