I need to also attach the obverse picture though - how do I send another picture, it doesn't give me an option to do another attachment?

Looks like PMD inflicted by too many fights with other coins in an overcrowded pocket

When you post the picture the link should come up in the area you write. Then click upload image again and it should let you upload another which will then show up as a link in the text box.

Really haven't explained it well sorry hope you can make some sense from it!

PMD = Post Mint Damage - makes sense!

Thanks for the info. Hey while on the topic, I also have 1 $1 coin and 1 20 cent piece with a hole in them (like as if someone drilled them to put on a necklace or something). Can post pics but won't worry if they are also likely to be PMD (sound all professional now)

If they were drilled, then they would be PMD as well since it was done after the minting process.

Is it possible the holes could have been made during the minting process?

No it is NOT possible the holes could have been made during the minting process.
Someone has scraped at the coins (with some sharp tool) from both sides possibly just to test the strength of a coin.
The comment of PMD, just to clarify some more is:
POST (after)
MINT (the manufacturing plant of the coins)
DAMAGE
This pretty much means that this damage has occured after & outside of the minting process (or outside of the mint).

The hole just looks so perfect, you can see from the pic how I thought it could of been an error (especially being a newbie)

At school me and some mates used to put holes in 10 and 20c coins. We would get a protractor and use the needle on the end to scrape away until there was a decent dent. Once there was a decent dent we would get the end of scissors and swivel it around and around until it went right through. It would take about 2 days of boring lessons to get through each coin.

in my case it was to join 2 different size electrical wires together. about 18 months back I done it, so plenty of time to circulate if it was the one of the ones I drilled
Rest in Peace
