Hey guys, I recently came across some 1922 Peace dollars, but they seem different to me. I hope one isn't fake, but I cant really tell. Also, anything you notice about the coins (cleaned, polished etc) would be appreciated because I'm a complete newbie just starting out in the hobby.

thanks in advance!

My opinion, would be that both are genuine. No 1922 peaace dollar (p d or s) would be worth counterfeiting in modern times. From those pictures, it would be hard to tell if there is any cleaning for sure, but it doesn't look like it to me.
Also, have you checked for a mint mark below ONE on the reverse?

The left one appears to be a higher grade with a possible better strike. That could easily account for the difference you're talking about.

Unfortunately, I disagree. IMO, any silver coin is worth counterfeiting these days. There are many foreign sources who would and will do this.

Yes, you're right. I just thought they would be found in way fewer numbers compared to a key date like the 1916-d mercury.

NGC just a few months back found recently produced counterfeit Buffalo Head Nickels from China... so yeah anything is up to be copied today if it'll sell at a profit.

However, those two Peace dollars do not raise any red flags for me.

If you're worried:

1) Do a magnet test (to see if they're magnetic; they shouldn't be)
2) Do a ring test (compare the tone when you flip it to a genuine silver dollar)
3) Look at it under 10x magnification. If there are little tiny pits all over the place (like the surface looks like styrofoam) it's a fake. If the surface is crumbly-dull-looking without a patina I'd be wary.

These three checks will tend to catch ~90% of fakes on that series on the market today.

It looks like the tops of the 2s hang down too far, and the 1 is bent, but that could be bad pix.

First and foremost, it's tough to tell with those pics. Can you get in closer? Most cameras have a "macro" function on there so you can get in close and capture all the details. Secondly, the 1922's are a common year, so the likelyhood that there are lots of counterfeits are highly unlikely. 1921 and 1928 exist more frequently because of their key status.

Attempt to post the reverses also. And basically as noted the couterfeiters go for more valuable coins and with the Silver Dollars there are way to many dates more worth faking. I too say yours are OK.
1. Where did you get them?
2. Did you buy them or get them from someone?
3. If you paid for them, how much were they?

I came across a Peace dollar the other week that had almost no detail in the eye. But otherwise looked normal. it weighed correctly, etc. My guess was poor struck. If I can get a picture of it up I'll post that.

Without looking at the coins in person, I'd guess they are genuine. 1922 Peace dollars are as common as dirt.

Aye, the date on the one on the right is suspect. Genuine Peace dollars had "pointy" 2s, not round ones. I can't quite make out the date well enough to see on the one on the left.
