Can you tell anything from these photos about this 1889 CC? Would grade would you give it? These are pictures the seller took for me on his phone so the quality is *** Edited by Staff - We are family friendly ***. I am not totally 100% sure about the source but I met him on ebay where he had a feedback around 100. We are gonna do a deal through a regular paypal purchase not going through ebay. Will paypal protect me in case it is a fake? Oh yeah and he wants $400 it. He said it was inherit from is GPA, so who knows.

What Would you Do?

Obverse, I know these are horrible pictures

Would you pay $400 and take the gamble on this coin? He says he is putting a 7 day return policy as a rider to the paypal contract.

*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***
Rest in Peace

Wouldn't touch it, especially off ebay with no PayEnemy protection. $400 is a third of its value if genuine.

I would get him to set it up as a buy it now on ebay and to send you the link immediately so both of you are protected in the purchase.

Would I not be protected through paypal? He is sending me a detailed invoice through paypal, seems legit but makes me nervous for sure. I'll let you know how it goes.

Here is the Reverse it looks as if it was deleted.

I will for sure. He put a guarantee on the Paypal invoice he sent saying I have 7 days to examine it. When I called paypal they said that counterfeit items are covered under the buyers protection plan they use.

I just had to take a gamble at $400.

From the pictures I have gotten it looks s to be a VF25 probably improperly cleaned but we will see. The seller owns a Subway restaurant and these were his GPA's coins, who worked for the Philly mint for four decades. I think he is legit but I have thought that before and been wrong LOL

Photos are bad but they don't show anything obviously out of line as far as I can tell. The coin does seem bright and hairlined, so probably cleaned and showing some retoning. Weigh it, carefully compare all features especially date and mintmark to hi-res images of genuine examples from Heritage or other sources, and take and post pictures if possible. If everything checks out, then send it to ANACS for authentication. As noted, it's a great deal if genuine. Good luck!

What reason did he give for not being able to take better pictures? Being an ebay seller why would he lose money selling the coin this way to you? You know as well as I do that if genuine and with some good pictures the coin would bring far more on ebay even taking into account the fees he's avoiding. I personally wouldn't do it, but one must take gambles to...

He just refunded me the money via paypal, and now won't respond to emails. This deal is dead in the water, there is something up here that is for sure. At least I got all my money back lol

Sounds very fishy to me. :-)

You're lucky not to have gotten further involved.

Same thing I've been thinking. He either didn't know what it was worth, found out it's a fake, someone he knows offered him a lot more.

I'm not posting his ebay ID yet as he could be a honey hole. We are still talking but he seems very fishy, want me to send it to his moms account now.

If it authentic does anyone have a guess on what its worth?
