Would be interested to know if anyone writes up their collections like a lot of stamp collectors do
Have been thinking about this for awhile as I just put my notes into Albums and run an excel spreadsheet to record what I have and what I am still looking for
Also does anyone exhibit their collections?

I do the same thing, I use excel sheets to keep record of all my collections. Name of article, year, catalog #, total I paid for, total I sold it for if I sold it, condition, catalog value and date and location where it was bought. I even have the total I paid for all my items and the total I received for all my sells.

I use an Excel spreadsheet to inventory my coins and notes.
I "exhibit" my Dansco 7070 filled with Chinese replicas for my friends and family to view.. I keep my good stuff tucked away from view.

What does "write up" mean? I have written articles for BNR.
I have never exhibited but I have given plenty of programs at shows. In fact, I will be giving one on collecting USDA Food Coupons at CPMX in March.

Fantastic question. I don't know anything about stamps, but my Dansco 7070 has a list of every coin, the variety, how it was aquired, the person who passed it on, etc. Was saving a scan for when it is finished (need 2 Seated dollars). But perhaps I will scan it in a couple days for inspiration. Sorry written on my phone. Shouldn't posting via txt on your mobile count twice? or am I just a serious nerd

Personally I couldn't see how someone won't catalogue, or write up their collection? (ok it takes time, but that is part of the hobby right? ) Personally, I started out with literally writiting down every single coin I had. But then I figured out I better put it on the PC. By now I have several documents tracking every single thing I add / remove from my collection. Nothing fancy, and pretty chaotic... but there is a method to the madness I use 3 sorts of documents: Words, Noteblock, Excel For example, the original document were ALL coins and notes are in is a word document of approximate: 117 pages and counting... (ALL in Times New Roman 12 ) But I have several core collections, so I started using excel to filter the cool coins & notes: world coins from 1500 / 1945, Dutch Banknotes, Silver, Euro's, USA, Switserland, Etc. So I ended up with several sub documents, some more elaborate than others (depending on my personal attachment of the collecting area) it can get a bit confusing at times. So that is why I always keep my original word doc. from 117 pages It's late here, or early I must say So sorry for my ramblings...but here are some examples of my excel fromats! All world coins: Banknotes Old World Coins & Silver Personal favorite

I don't "write up" my collection but I do have everything listed on an excel spreadsheets. A separate one for coins and notes. I know it's common sense (but anyone can have lapses) don't forget to make a regular separate back-up of your files. Had a hard drive crash on me last year. Someone managed to recover some, but certainly not all, files. Fortunately these included my collection files. If they hadn't been recovered I would virtually have had to start at square one and quite possibly months of solid work ahead.

I don't do anything, which is weird considering I haven't seen my collection for nearly a year now and won't see it for more than a year to come.
But then again my note collection is small, and sporadic, mainly based on countries I have been to. My chinese collection is okay at the moment.

I think the best way to do it is google docs-spreadsheet , which will help you to escape any sort of hard drive crashes and it automatically saves even if the net goes down while you are working on it..

Having a spreadsheet and backup is most useful in event of fire, flood, robbery, etc. Some folks make videos, or scan pages of coins.

I prefer to write it up by hand, I use exercise books. One for cataloging what notes I have and one for rough translations of verses on some notes (I collect Notgeld).
