Long story short...I dropped by my local coin dealer yesterday looking for some wheats. They didn't have any 1000-count bags. I found a used Dansco Buffalo album for $9, and then decided to buy myself a new Jefferson Dansco. I really like this album. For $2 or $3 more, I could have bought one with holes for the proofs. I wanted one that I could fill with business-strike, "pocket-change/found-in-circulation" coins.

After that, I stopped by my bank and picked up 2 boxes of nickels. To be honest, I'm amazed at how many holes I've been able to fill with just one box.

I paid $27 for the album, and I've got about $7 invested in the coins inside it so far. I can't remember the last time I had this much fun while spending less than $40.

Just thought I'd share.

That was a sweet box if you did that damage to a fresh Dansco!

I love it! And yeah, you can get quite a large chunk done from just one box. Pretty fun stuff. I just picked up a box from the bank today and am hopeful that it's not a shiny new box of 2011's. :)

I have the Dansco w/ proof-only issues that I'm using for my UNC/Proof set. I am also putting together a set from circulation in Harris folders.

Have fun!

Wow, yeah, nice box.
3 silvers, both 2009s, and a 1938. And the Dansco looks nice!

That's the beauty of Jefferson nickels. I guess you can do about as well at filling a Dansco from JFK half dollar roll hunting, but nickels go back another quarter century. Most of the remaining holes should be no surprise to veteran nickel hunters.
Rest in Peace

That's one heck of a box! I've yet to find a single 09, and I'm 6 boxes in, let alone some of the other coins you scored in that box.

My brother is searching halves for the silver. I was able to talk him into buying a JFK Dansco. He's managed to fill quite a few holes in the couple of months he's been searching.

Up until yesterday, I only searched boxes of nickels for the silver. To be honest, I'll probably never even attempt to look for "upgrades" for this album. Having the album now...along with the empty holes...gives me another reason to search.

By the way...I just finished the 2nd box, and I managed to fill 3 more holes. One of them was the 1943D!

43-D is one of the hardest silvers. I'm still missing mine after ~50 boxes. I recommend upgrading as you go along. What I do is when I'm searching, if I see any that are in unusually good condition for the date, I stick them in a tube. Periodically, I'll go through the tubes, pick the best few for each date and compare to what I have in the album and make upgrades as appropriate. It can be surprising how nice old nickels can be after all these years. Here are a couple of my nicer ones:

Great fun indeed!

Roll searching for nickels is a very enjoyable way to enjoy the hobby IMHO ... and with enough dedication it is still possible to complete the entire circulation strike series from rolls.

Appears from the photos that you are off to a great start.

Hey ... I need that one.

Still looking for my 1943-D ... and I'm over 132 boxes into the search so far.

Keep us posted on your finds ... and enjoy the hunt.

My way is similar but get $200 bags from the bank, they come from the coin sorting machine. The first bag had 27 different nickels in the 1938 - 1959 time period (43 in total). The next bag had 20 different ones (44 in total). They filled 32 holes in total with 3 silver for the time period 1938 - 1959. Only 2 2009 D. Other than that I think I saw about all of the other coins but no 1960 D. There rarest finds were a 1950, 1951 S, and a 1955

I'm in the same boat. Five boxes and no 2009's yet!

7 boxes into my search so far. 14 holes left to fill. 9 of the war-nickels, 38d and s, 39d, 50d, and 55p.

My brother searched one of the boxes, and found this one for me...

I've found 12 2009D's so far as well...along with another 1943D silver.
