Thanks everyone for your replies. My dad sort of got me into coins maybe 15 years ago...but his collection only was pretty much Pennies which included a 1925 (in gF) & a cleaned 1946 amongst a bundle of cleanead & uncleaned Pennies. Then whenever he'd go overseas he'd buy me some cheap UNC sets from random countries. Maybe five years ago I somehow got back into it. I guess with the retail business, I was looking at other ways to invest money or even to convert cash to assets. From there I've looked at all sorts of things. I guess the one thing that I've got going for me now is that I can "sort of" afford it...I guess none of us can really afford it but at the same time we can. In the past five years my collection has blossomed with some really cheap purchases, a lot of bags of copper & also a lot of nice polymers through the till...but with the good come the bad, a couple times I've paid too much, a couple of times I've been ripped off (as I think most of us have)...All-in-all it'll keep going for me. I enjoy it. It's a hobby, a passion, an investment & so much more.

0 - 19:...there's a bar for you to vote. That way you can be older than you are! You can be 19 if you want. The legal age for too much. (all of which can be done before the legal age)

If you make a post in a poll before voting, you can't vote in it - the forum software assumes you don't want to vote. In a CCF poll, always vote first, then post comments.

Quote: My dad sort of got me into coins maybe 15 years ago... My family were stamp collectors. What got me into coins was finding sixpences in my change during the late 70s. With my pocket money I ended up buying the 1979, 1980 & 1981 mint sets, a round 50c and kept a few $1 and $2 notes from circulation (I've still got all of them). Back then decimal coins were pretty much uncollectable. There were only 2 commemmoratives (1970 Captain Cook, 1977 Silver Jubilee) and all the decimal coins had high mintages (Back then the 1972 5c and 1968 2c hadn't yet become scarce). So predecimals were the only coins worth collecting. How times have changed now.....

I haven't seen any Australian pre decimals in circulation since the early 80s (the silver price probably flushed the remainder out). I've heard of noodlers occasionally finding them but I suspect that they are coins from peoples collections that have found there way back into circulation.

Do enough noodling and you tell us I think the last one I got was about 4 or 5 years ago and it was a 58 kiwi shilling in with the 10's You may be surprised how many foreign coins you come across as well..especially kiwi coins

Quote: when was the last time you saw a pre-dec coin in circulation? Just about predecimal - I received two round 50 cents last year from a customer who asked if I still take round 50 cent pieces...I smiled & politely nodded & said 'yes we do, money is money'... Actual pre-decimal - But not too long ago, maybe the start of last year (2011) I received a 1954 Commemorative Florin (instead of a 20c) & not too long after that a sixpence (instead of a 5c). That's my definition of an over circulated pre-decimal coin.
