Before I picked up my 70s Small Date I was looking through ebay's Listings. This is one that I had looked at and was surprised to see it was Graded and Listed as a Small Date but it is not...

Is this a fake slab or did somebody mess up badly?

I contacted the seller and informed him but he just said it was an Authenticated Small Date. He has re listed this item numerous times...

Am I missing something?

Seller is just stubborn, I guess.
That is definitely a Large Date.

We've seen this one before. Kinda feel for the person that eventually falls for it but then again...caveat emptor.

Wouldn't NGC be on the hook for this mistake? If it is so obvious, how could they not be?

Edit: with that being said, aside from an obvious attempt at tampering with the slab, what other excuse could there be for a mistake such as this?

If it's not a small date...then NGC must purchase the coin at market value or replace it with a true small date? I know they guarantee their grades. I don't know if they guarantee their attributions.

LD for sure! I've posted many times b4 about a lot of the SDs on ebay actually being LDs on raw coins. This is the first time I've seen one in a slab like that. I can't believe TPGs make this kinda mistake. I also don't believe 64 is the finest MS grade. Some kinda hanky panky going on.

I've seen enough mistakes like this to say it is not a one time thing. Worst one I saw was an 88-D RDV-006 by PCGS that somebody paid $500 for...it was an RDV-005. I'm really surprised this large date is up to $41...must be some bidders that like plastic

Maine- The seller tried to sell that coin in the past and it went up to $68.00 and the reserve was not met!

Goes to show ebay doesn't care as long as they get their hefty fees.

Definitely the low 7 and it is for examples like this that I personally do not buy slabbed coins. I mean having a coin "slabbed" these days equates to nothing but paying a company for their grader's, or group of grader's opinion(s). Well who's to say my opinion, or even yours is the same? Several years back it was about authenticating a coin and that should be in itself the most important aspect of sending a coin in. As pointed out again in this thread, they are not always right. If you're an avid collector you should know how to grade and tell the good coins from the bad. If not, find a reputable dealer who does. Simple rule of thumb ... know your coins and your dealer.

The seller's close-up pic should convince anyone who knows not to buy it.
If that's not convincing enough, compare the reverse position on the ebay coin to NGC's

"know your coins and your dealer"
Amen. Also, buy the coin, not the slab.

I don't get it? The seller is desperately trying to sell an item by continuously re-listing the item (which cost money as well) and if it does sell, they have to pay another 20%+ in fees to ebay and their baby, Paypal.

That company has gotten all of the fees they will get from me. The last month I was actively selling there, when junk silver had really spiked, my fees were $1,700+....
