This 960R is struck over a Bolivia Colonial 8R. The planchet is oversize at 42 mm. The 1st edge photo is above the B in SUBQ. The 2nd edge photo above the T of NATA. Notice the 2 different edge styles on the 1st photo and the remnants of the original 8R edge in the second photo. In total there are 3 different edges on this coin! Has anyone seen something similar? Especially the 2 different styles in photo 1?! *** Edited by Staff - Please Review the rules that you agreed to when you registered. ***

It sort of looks like the Brazilian "overedging" was double stamped in that one section (to the left in the 1st photo/right in the 2nd photo)...

You can also see traces of the Spanish Colonial edge. Usually the original edge was obliterated by the re-edging but not always. Remember the planchets used for the 960 were actually 8Rs from the Spanish colonies.

Bob, he's asking why one section of the Brazilian "overedging" seems to look different than the other section. In the first photo, look to the left of the center point as the photo is showing it... it looks like that whole portion is completely overlapped as compared to the portion seen to the right of photo's center... Then I believe he's showing the 180 flip side view, which (to our right of the remnant circles/rectangles) would seem to indicate that said effect seems to continue around that whole half of the coin, while the other half of the edge design looks "normal".

I recognize "cinco" here as a pretty dedicated accumulator/collector and also seller of Mex Cap & Rays plus other Latin Amer. reales/decimal types...

The coin is most likely one that was slightly out of round when it was re-edged by the Brazilian government. I do not know if the Brazilians used an edging mill like the one used at Mexico City or not.

Bit if you were to start with an out of round planchet you would need an automatically adjusting edging mill to avoid weakly applied edges at the points where the diameter was least.

I think more research is required before I could say for sure that was the cause - but lacking evidence to the contrary, I would expect this theory is quite likely valid.
