Politics aside, given that the mint is not going to be releasing the coins as they have in the past what do you feel is the collectability factor of this series and will it be progressively harder to complete a set?
If I did a presidential coin set I most likely would want to collect all mint marks.

I know I'm not holding my breath to get the post 2011's, so I did not invest in an album for them. I at least have one of each president, getting BOTH mints of '08-'11 would be gravy for me at this point.

, ghostrider! I'm guessing it will be like the Ikes and SBAs. Some interest, some completed sets, then eventually people taking a serious look at how difficult certain issues are.

I also haven't picked up an album for them yet. But I have been able to get a roll of every president up to Rutherford Hayes. Just one mint mark though not both. Mostly P's. I love picking them up at the bank, instead of paying premium for collector rolls of the same coin. But looks like that's coming to an end. IMO now would be the time to start collecting them. Cause if you can't get them at the bank, and they are just produced for collectors, we might see some nice numbers. And Welcome Ghostrider!

I agree that now is the time to start collecting them. You will be able to get the coins you need for the set one way or another, just not from the bank.

It'll be tough to get the 2012 and beyond, unless you want to pay above face value. I can't get them at my bank anymore, so collecting from circulation will be impossible from now on. The only way to get the new ones is from the Mint's web site (as a roll, bag, or Mint set) or a coin dealer. I do have a folder for them to collect both P&D, but since I can't get them from circulation, my folders will never be complete. I don't like to break the sets apart. The value won't increase either, since the demand isn't strong for them. Most say they look like tokens, since they have the same color as Chuck E. Cheese tokens. Kind of a lame excuse, since tokens come in many different metals, including nickel. Why don't they say the Washington quarter looks like a token? Probably because they never saw a nickel token. I like the 3D affect on the bust. Much better than the old side shot used on coins for over 2,000 years. Collectors want change, they get it, and complain it isn't like the old. Crazy.

I don't think that is a good indicator of future popularity. People didn't like the Morgan dollars at all when they first came out either, but they are almost the mainstay of the hobby now days. When certain sets get bought up to unavailability then small series like SBAs, Franklin half's, and possibly later on the Presidential dollars will gain stronger followings. And if not, who cares, if you like to collect them yourself then it doesn't matter what others say. I like them and will continue to collect them regardless of popularity.

"From circulation".....yes, it'll be tough. But all you need to do is buy the annual U.S. Mint Uncirculated Set.....and the annual Proof Set (Which many already do for their "other" coin needs) Doing this will get you your P and D mints.....and the Proofs. Even and esp., if the Prez. dollars go N.I.F.C..... this will be the way to stay current and be complete with BU/MS issues. Don't have any qualms whatsoever about busting those coins out of their O.G.P.'s for my Dansco's ! ........ Some folks even buy one Mint Set to keep intact for future needs, and use the other one to "bust up" to get all of the coins that they need for their albums. Cents, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, Kennedys, Native Dollars, Prez. dollars......... THEY'RE ALL IN THERE ! THIS is how you'll stay current. And THIS is how you'll be able to secure BOTH mints in nice condition, each and every year. Personally, I only care about the "Proof" Presidential dollars. I have a nice Whitman album to house them, and I'm staying current so far. Since my collecting needs have me buying each yearly Mint Set and Proof Set ANYWAY...... I have these coins already to do with what I will.....and why not "use them" properly? The P & D's Dollar coins all come with the Mint Sets, and I'm certainly not going to cut out all the Cents, Nickels, Dimes, etc. etc. etc., and just leave or "spend" the Dollar coins in there ! ....... No way.....so I make the albums ! It doesn't matter that, now, that I can't get them for face value at my bank........couldn't get " both" P & D there anyway......and could NEVER get the Native Dollars there.....so..... The Mint Sets from the U.S. Mint website serve my purposes quite well ! .... Here's the site to buy direct from The United States Mint, if you never have or weren't aware of the option to do so: CLICK HERE ****http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ory_rn=10211

I see the mint rolls are already going for 2X face on ebay. I just found a bank that has several of them. Should I get them?

I wouldn't...... that bubble will be brief and very minimal, I bet, once all costs, shipping, fuel, transaction fees, etc. etc. are all tallied up. The "alarm" for the hoarding of these, should not be sounding for anyone, IMO ! ....

The trick with the pres dollars is if you don't want the satin finish ones. You'd have to get the 16 brilliant finish coins from 2007-2010 from ebay or something.

This will be a nice set either in MS and proof or both once it's completed in 2016 or 2017 (depends if Jimmy and Bush Sr. decide to go to the Oval Office in the sky by 2015 or not.) In any case there might be much more interest if that great flood of dollar coins ever happens (assuming that the paper dollar is phased out, which I think will be an eventuality.) Collectors will start looking for minting varieties in the earlier issues, and there would be pressure on the NCLT issues, which makes them a smart buy for this year, as the premium is so slight. A lot of marketers have probably targeted this year's coins for hoarding so they can drive the price once these sell out. It would be a repeat of the 2001-S Sackie proof, which went to $60-$80 per coin heights, and is not rare, just hoarded, creating an artificial scarcity.

I recently put together a set of proofs in a Dansco date set. I didn't have much interest in them for a while, but the proofs were in the proof sets I was getting every year so I figured I might as well put them in a book. My inside source has mentioned several times that I should complete a P/D set and I've been considering it. Especially since the numbers are going to go down. I want to get the set caught up before they start disappearing. I might even complete two if the price is right.

I personally think it will be quite easy to complete a set of Presidential dollars. Just wait a couple years after the release and look on ebay. You should find them for about 1/2 the original price. That is for uncirculated sets and proof sets, I'm not sure what rolls go for since I don't buy them.

I have decided to only collect the proofs, since I already have been getting them from the proof sets. I have not bought an album yet, but I may get one soon now that I have made the "proof only" decision. The reason why I waited so long was that I was not sure if I wanted to do a P/D/S date and mint set, or just date only (in my case, the proofs). Collecting P/D/S seemed pointless to me since the mint mark is not visible when the coins are in the album.
Regarding the original question, I think Biggfredd has summed it up the best.

Hmm, that's a good point. I haven't settled yet... I'm also getting P&D from mint sets, but with the satin finish ones...
