I think it is time for a new half dollar. The same design now for 51 years. If I am not mistaken, it is eligible to have the design changed. Weather or not it will ever change remains to be seen. Perhaps with a new eagle reverse and maybe the Statue of Liberty on the obverse.

While it may be true that "new" types of coins might influence a few more collectors into the fold the reason that I don't collect anything after 1964 is simply because of the huge number of "new" types already issued.
You would have to be quite rich just to acquire one of each mint product issued each year as it is. Regardless of if those "new" coins are for circulation or almost exclusively for the collector it is virtually impossible for a collector to acquire just one of each proof and mint state issue now. If you add in the multitude of Eagle platinum, gold, and silver, then toss on a few commemoratives in all types of "finishes" the number quickly escalates to an impossible dollar amount.
Instead of wanting MORE coin types I long for the days when a proof and a mint set and maybe a commemorative or two would catch you up for any year.

As long as the Kennedy half dollar is NIFC, I see no reason to change it. Changing the design means that design was never a circulating design. This, in my opinion, means it no longer belongs in annual sets. Now, if the stockpile in the Fed gets low enough for them to request an order, then by all means, change the design so they will get out into the wild. And yes, the Dime could use a refresh as well.

I believe we could get halves circulating more if they are redesigned.

I disagree. The Native American and Presidential dollars did not help the dollar coins. Design is immaterial, they need to kill the one dollar note. Now if we kill off the cent, nickel, and quarter, then you will see the half dollar make a comeback.

More likely that they would discontinue the denomination than change the design. Those collecting Kennedy half dollars are the only ones buying them, and who knows how many new collectors would start a new half collection if a new NIFC half was minted.

Discontinuing the half would be another option. Why should mint and proof sets contain coins that aren't issued for circulation? Aren't those sets meant to showcase the best examples of circulation coinage?

Yes, and technically the half dollar is still a circulating coin. The Fed has enough on hand to satisfy demand and they are no longer ordering them, so the mint is only producing enough to meet collector demand (de facto NIFC status). If Fed ran out tomorrow then the mint would have to release some into circulation and they sill have the authority to do so.

I think change to make a unified series would be better. Change all the coins.
