Yeppers... Penn Peerless's was what my dad (and all the surf fishermen) used at the time... The screw on the end is just wide enough(with a little force helping - I have a few reels I was left and can see it happening under a few whiskeys).. No telling with those guys what else it could have been used for... I guess its no different today... I routinely use quarters for shotgun choke tube wrenches and dimes for my fishing reel. I guess if I messed up and used a wisconsin error quarter for the shotgun choke or a W mint dime for a reel I'd be just as guilty..
Another interesting caveat is that some of the reels I have are in better MUCH better shape than the coin. Guess you have to have your priorities...
