So I've just started searing Sealed boxes of coins from the bank. I have done a few boxes of nickels and found 4 Buffalo nickels and a 1902 Liberty head Nickel.

Im just wondering what people are finding and what you are looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also one more question. what are you looking for in boxes of pennies? Do you just look for wheat's, and indian heads or other stuff that I don't know about yet.

I just did a box of pennies and found 138 wheat pennies

Thanks

138 wheat pennies in a box? I've done four boxes and my highest was 22 wheats in a box oldest being 1918. I keep all pre 1982 as they are 95% copper, I keep all uncirculated coins, all foreign, and all 2009. I also check for WAM'S AND CAM'S on the coin that is applies on. If you don't have one yet get a 2012 Red Book it is very helpful and only like $10.00 of so.

ive done probley around 8 boxs of pennies and was getting around 10-20 per box. these were from a brinks sealed box. Then I tryed a differnt bank and the first box I got 5 wheats :( . then the second box found 6 rolls with a wheat on the end, 1 roll with a wheat on both ends. WHen I opend the rolls the ones with wheats didnt have just one they had up to 13 in the roll. I did find 2 wheats out of those 138 that were what Red Book considers Uncirculated Condition

Oldest Coins I've found

1916 Penny
1902 Nickel
1952 dime

Kingcoin- I do have a 2012 Red Book. But I am not sure what WAM's and CAM's are. I dont keep all the copper coins because If I read it right 1 lb of copper is only worth $3.00. Also why do you keep all foreigh coins? I've only found Canadian coins and I didnt know if they were worth anything so I put them Back.

Question for all who search sealed boxs: do you re-wrap your coins before you return them? and do you return them to the same bank? I dont want to make my tellers dislike me, so I try to split it up.

Think that box with all those wheats was a one time deal. Come Monday I'm gona go back to that bank and see if they will give me 10 boxs of pennies lol
Thanks for all the help :)

The only way I know to add pictures is to use tinypic.com so not sure if this will work or not. But I'm going to post below the wheat I found that is AU. all the wheats I've found out of roughly 8 boxes. 3 Bufallo Nickels I found, and A liberty I've found. I also have a pile of pre 1961 Jefferson nickels I'm saving so I can try to complete a couple of coin books to sell them on ebay.

KingCoin: You said you keep pre 1982 pennies because they are 95% copper. Do you keep 1982 too? or just 1981,1980 and so on.

1982 cents need to be sorted by weight, because some are copper and some are zinc.A copper cent eighs 3.1 grams and a zinc is 2.5 grams. There are also seven major varieties of 1982 cents, large and small date copper and zinc

So copper is running around $3-$3.50 a pound and it takes 145 95% copper pennies to make a pound. So just about doubles your money. So 1982 they made two different pennies one that was 95% copper and one that was the copper plated zinc one. I usually don't keep the 1982's because I'm not sure. I have around 15 pounds of copper pennies so far. On ebay people are selling them around $2.50-$3.00 a pound. I found an uncirculated 1955 wheat yesterday. I keep foreign coins just because I think they're cool and although there not worth much I bet if I get 100 foreigns and put it as a lot on ebay I can get a few bucks out of it.

A WAM is a type of error coins the three main years are 1999,1998, and 2000 but you can find them on 1996 cents also. The AM in America are supposed to be touching but if they are not it is a Wide AM. For the year 1992 they are supposed to separate the AM so if you find them touching it is a Close AM.

i get coins at one bank and bring it to a coin machine at another.

Some of my foreign coins are from other countries besides Canada.

I hope this helps,
Matt

A minor note of clarification for some newer members. The 1996 WAM found by Bill Crawford is generally regarded as a hoax. No documentation exsists and no others have been found.

mrlexmark,

to the Forum!

Just curious, based on your name, are you from the Lexington KY area (as Lexmark's international HQ is here in Lexington)? I do the exact same thing that you do (going through boxes from banks) and I was just curious if we were going to stumble into each other! There are countless boxes to go around, so no fear of running out of coins to search, of course. Just curious is all.

I am a member of TD bank and I do not pay a fee for returning coins but if you are a guest its a 6% fee. So The price for CAM's and WAM's depend on the year. Most common WAM is a 2000 worth around $5-$10 ungraded, one sold on ebay graded by ICG in MS66 condition for $25.50 with shipping. A 1999 is the rarest rebook has it at $500. A 1998 is $10-$15. The CAM's go for a lot usually. Do you plan on doing this for collection, investment, or to sell?

Kingcoin: Do you have any pictures of CAMS or WAMS that you have found so I know what they look like. The one bank I am a member at has a change machine but once you go over $50 they star taken 3% out. So I just hit all the banks in the area and ask for coin rolls, Then I return them to the teller at my bank who is extremely nice about it. She says as long as I keep bringing her coins then she dont have to order any :). I am collecting, and looking to sell them.

I still have the 2 boxs I got yesterday and I got 2 more sealed boxs today. So right now I'm going through the first 2 to see how many coppers I can find. As for the 2 sealed boxs I wont get to them till later tonight or some time tomorrow. When I finish sorthing through all them I will post my findings.

WAM click on the the word I just typed and pictures will come up. I did two boxes today and have one left. I sell stuff too, do you sell on ebay?

I think I might invest in $100 copper sorting machine and it also sorts out silver coins.

So I've gone through 3 of the 4 boxs of pennies I got.

Heres the Results:
Box 1: 6 Wheats
Box 2: 138 Wheats
Box 3: 23 Wheats

Out of the three boxs I have 41 Rolls Of Pre 1982 Copper Pennies.

I also found this pennie. The front is smooth and you can barley see the outline of lincoln. I'm not sure if its a error or just from being in circulation. I tryed to get the best picture I could. Any Ideas?

KingCoin: Have you found any WAM's or CAM's? And where did you find a copper sorthing machine? Do you have a link for it so I can take a look.

I also found about 2 rolls of 1982 Pennies and I weighed each of them to make sure they were 3.11 Grams
