I know for the most part, it is not a great idea to order mail order coins. In the weekly circulator, there is an ad from Littleton Coin (?) for a set of Native American dollar Coins. Included in the set, you get both P & D mints of the 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Also, as a free gift you get a set of the 2009 cents. They are advertising all of this for only $8 with free shipping. Is there a catch with this company? Has anyone dealt with them before? I am sceptical of the deal.

You should go to the Search Tab at the top and type in Littleton. You will see if still there that there has been numerous discussions about them.
The one big complaint is that once your on their mailing list, the start sending you coins regardless of if you wanted them or not. Some have said they do have high quality coins though. Again, I suggest your use the Search tab for this.
As to FREE shipping. That is becoming one of the biggest scams going around. On TV many companies claim FREE SHIPPING. I tend to get many mail order catalogs and on ALL of them, the cover now states FREE SHIPPING. It appears everyone is jumping on the band wagon, so to speak, with that sales gimmick. You'll find they simply raise prices of everything and also add in things like a Handling charge.
Also, Littleton makes many other coin related items such as Albums.
As to this add, something is fishy. If you get dollar coins for 09, 10, 11 and 12, and both mints, that already is $8.00 Then add in those 2009 Lincoln Cents, it all adds up sort of odd. I'd check as to what those so called dollar coins are. Also, just how many of the 2009 cents do you get? You could always call them and ask for details before you buy anything from them.

thank you for the input Just Carl. I am newer to coin collecting and have not used any mail order coin companies yet.

I think you have to comparison shop.
I have bought coins from this company in the past, their deals on ASE's and westward nickel sets have been the best I could find certain years. I Bought their ASE's in their "showpack" packaging and just cut them out of the packaging for my Dansco album.
This offer sounds like a loss leader to me. If it is as described, the company is willing to pay a small premium to get you on their mailing list. After they send the coins advertised in the ad, they will then send you coins "On consignment" I think is the term they use. They'll send you some common modern coins which are way overpriced, but you just send them back in the postage paid envelope, no questions asked. You'll also get catalogs in the mail and if they have your email address, email offers. Occasionally they are worth buying, but you have to compare them to deals elsewhere
Usually you can find a better deal elsewhere, but for this deal it may be worth your time and effort.

well I took them up on their offer. I refused the approvals and sent them back on their dime. I've not had the horror stories about Littleton as some have. I don't buy from them because they are just plain expensive. But I needed some of those dollars and I thought my price was like 9.95 . Anyway, I paid $1.25 for a Unc dollar coin and spent the rest of the ones I didn't want. Great deal in my opinion.

definately a loss leader. I've always been a little leary of all companies that send you something "on approval" and then you have to mail it back. Whether it is books, cd's, dvds, or coins.
