I went to my local shop last week, and as I frequently do look through the dateless nickels. Since they are only 15 cents each I usually will buy any with mintmarks in the hope of mostly getting a 1913 Type II D or S. But after restoring this one I was sure it was a 1918/7d. Tough to convey it in photos, but I will try. I did a lot of research online trying to find information on die identification markings and I found out a little, but perhaps somebody out there will know more than me. I will post the best photos that I can.

Opinions? Or impossible to tell?

How about a close-up of the date?

I tried, but the best shot I was able to get of the date is the one in the obverse photo. Tough to get good shots of restored dates sometimes.

Some websites state a slightly-leaning to the left mintmark as a diagnostic.
I see that on your coin.

I think you scored there. Congrats! I enlarged it and there's little doubt.

Found something else:

Is there a slight die rotation on this coin? On most of the ones I am finding online, the reverse is rotated slightly counterclockwise, about 10 degrees..

Thanks coinsearcher83!

Yes, mine is rotated counterclockwise, about 5-10%. Encouraging!

Now I wonder is it worth sending to ANACS to get it certified? I know people have done this with 1916 Doubled Die Buffaloes with success.

There is a characteristic die crack on the cheek of most 1917/8-D Buffaloes. I think I see it, but it's hard to see on a well worn coin like this. Am I the only one seeing that?
