I was thinking about dipping this coin another time but I think I will just leave it as is.

Nice coin, detail is very nice so I wouldn't do anything else to it.

I really like these provincials--the subjects on the reverse are interesting, especially at this size Doing a quick read on Hostilian, he came from the same province as this coin, which might explain depicting the Moesia cult goddess.

I think this coin was already cleaned by professionals many years ago, before it was released into the market. I think evidence of that can be found in the smoothing of the fields around the bust, and on the reverse also.
There has been no tooling in the lettering, some hard gunk remains in these areas. I think that the cleaners have reasoned that discretion would have been the better part of valour, and left this area alone. They know that market hammers the value of coins that have been tooled.
It may have been almost unidentifiable before cleaning.
It certainly does not need any further attention.
Mostly, those guys can do a far better job than us. Best for us to pick up experience on low value uncleaned late Roman bronzes, where the professionals don't see enough return for their efforts.

I was trying to remove some more of the crud on the coin but I dont think it will make the coin look much better if I put anymore chemicals on it.

Physical removal of the crud with a hard impliment may leave bright scratches where you have been working. I can see some evidence of attempts to physically remove the crud. That has been done rather skillfully, and the lettering has not been affected. What crud that has been removed, was probably chemically softened beforehand.
Extra chemical treatment most probably will attack the already cleaned parts, in preference to the crud.
Discretion is the better part of valour. Now best left alone.

sel_69l I think you are right I was trying to get rid of some of the crud but I think if I mess with this old coin much more I will end up doing more damage then good. I like it the way it is, it looks much better in hand the pictures seem to bring out the ugly spots more.

I see you worked on the portrait--a definite improvement around the mouth.

Ummm hey, I must admit that I am a total imbecile in a few categories, but especially where this topic is concerned => ummm, isn't this "cleaning ritual" a bit like you're chiseling-out and trying to mimic a known example? (or do the "flakes of grunge" merely fall-off and leave the proper/correct original surfaces underneath?)
... ummm hey, I'm just sayin'

well first you have to have a good hammer and chisel and a blowtorch.... no its a gentle cleaning that leaves the patina on the coin. You dont want to remove the patina. this did lighten the patina a little bit but its still there and yes the way I clean it the cement hard encrustation does come off much easier. Nothing harder then a soft toothbrush and a few picks of a wooden toothpick was used so no coins where harmed in any way

oh yeah and a bit of a "top secret" chemical formula which was discussed before on this forum in full detail. but I did mess with the recipe a little to soften the kick of the chemical mixture. Its basically the result of experimentation and trial and error.
