Well, after not buying for a month, I went on a spending spree this weekend and purchased five coins. One, the sellers images are so bad, I will have to wait till it arrives to post. However, he sold it as a Nerva when in fact it is a provincial coin of Augustus I believe.

The other four coins, though not rare, are coins I either did not have or only had one coin in poor condition in my collection.

The first coin is a Denarius of Lucilla, RIC 781, struck at Rome in 165-169 AD:

OBV: LVCILLA AVGVSTA, draped bust right
REV: PVDICITIA, Pudicitia seated left, veiled & holding hand on breast
2.5g, 18.5mm

New-Coins---Budget-Spent

The second coin is an Antoninianus of Trajan Decius, RIC-IV_iii, 16c, struck at Rome in 249 AD:

OBV: IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG, radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right
REV: GENIVS EXERC ILLVRICIANI, Genius standing left with patera & cornucopiae; standard at right
4.30 g, 20.1mm

New-Coins---Budget-Spent

The third coin is an Antoninianus of Valerian I, RIC 13, struck at Lyons, 258-259AD:

OBV: VALERIANVS PF AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right
REV: ORIENS AVGG, Sol, standing left, holding globe & raising right hand

New-Coins---Budget-Spent

And the fourth coin is a Centenionalis of Constantius Gallus, RIC-VIII, 95, struck at Cyzicus in 351-354 AD:

OBV: D N FL CL CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES, Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right
REV: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Helmeted soldier to left, shield on left arm, spearing fallen horseman; shield on ground at right. Horseman turns to face soldier and raises right arm. SMKA in ex.
5.4g, 23.9mm

New-Coins---Budget-Spent

Total I spent less than $75 for all five coins so I think I got bargains on all of these coins.

Wisely done JW

The bust style on the Fel Temp is not one you see all the time.

There is one sort of similar here.http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/yorkc...Product=7196
Scoll down a bit for an interesting article.

Thanks Doucet. I just double checked the attribution on this coin and it should be Cyzicus RIC-VIII 97. The difference is the mintmark is "dot SMKA". It was the bust style that drew my attention to this coin. However, I did want a better example of a Constantius Gallus in my collection as well and this fills the requirement quite well for me.

I like the Decius with tone and a better than average reverse type. Unfortunately it is often not real well struck on the legends. On the other end is the Lucilla which is poorly cleaned. Overall, a reasonable group.

Very nice group--well-chosen. I always run across a new Roman ruler on this forum--this time Constantius Gallus--was this the beginning of the divided empire?

In 350, Magnentius had rebelled and killed the emperor Constans, claiming the purple. Constantius II prepared to move against the usurper, but needed a representative in the East, so he called Gallus at Sirmium, raised him to the rank of caesar (15 March 351), gave him the name Constantius, and strengthened the bonds with his cousin by allowing Gallus to marry his sister Constantina. Gallus and Constantina, who probably shared her brother's aim of controlling the young Caesar, set up residence in Antioch.

The story of Gallus and later how he was replaced by Julian is worth reading if you are not familiar with him. Constantius II was the last surviving son of Constantine the Great and his somewhat ruthless rise to sole power left him a problem when it came to finding help and support within the family.

Glad you picked the Con Gallus up - It certainly caught my eye when you posted it yesterday, very interesting. I was also pleasantly surprised when I saw the price of it, I was considering buying it myself

Nice coins - and even though the Constantius Gallus is "the bronze one" I think it's the most interesting - )for the obverse bust type)

Thanks, I'm really looking forward to it arriving. I will be out of country for the next nearly 2 weeks, so I hope it comes before I leave. I got the Valerianus today and of course it's better in hand as usual. So I'm hoping for the rest by week's end.
