Well, I got my 1909 S VDB back from NGC in F12, which was totally expected. This is the one someone told me it was counterfeit and that someone had glued the mint mark on. The coin is a brownie, which seems to shimmer as you tilt it across a light source. The eye appeal is outstanding, especially for F12. Anyway, I paid the extra 5 bucks to have it photographed at NGC. I looked it up in the registry and boy, is the photo horrible. You can't even see the mintmark or United States of America on the back. Wow. And the picture is so out of focus, the text on the slab is blurry. Seriously a waste of money. Look it up if you wish, here is the reg number: 2574246-001 I'll get some better pics up here in a couple of days.

DV, haha no it wasn't anyone on the forums. It was someone who viewed it in hand, and has decades of experience with Lincoln cents. But if it was, I wouldn't be talking to you any more

For real!? I am a seriously armature photographer and can do way better than that. I might be able to land a sweet paying job with them if I print out my pics and send them a portfolio with a resume'.

I don't understand because they do those pictures for every coin that comes in, are you sure you didn't get a photograph on a disc or something in high resolution? I have never had them photograph a coin for me but I am guessing you would get a copy of a high resolution picture of your coin instead of the one they take of every coin that they grade Edit: I just looked on their page here http://www.ngccoin.com/imaging-serv...-images.aspx and for $5.00 it says they send you a "low resolution image" via email, and when they say low resolution they mean it (72 dpi) Quote: Images of the NGC coin holder's obverse and reverse provided in JPEG format via email For $10.00 they would send you a cd with a High Resolution image on cd, even that is only 300 dpi

Actually, I don't recall whether I paid the $5 or $10 for the picture. On the submission form, under Image, you can choose None, Low-Rez or High-Rez. Why would they even offer a low res picture? The low res equates to "out of focus and lack of lighting". I'm calling BS on this. I could have taken a better picture with my 3 year old phone. They should contact Heritage for a photography lesson. Oh well, guess I'm giving someone a job.

In this day and age of high-megapixel cameras, it's actually extra work to produce a low-res image...

I've used the NGC pictures before to verify that the coin for sale is the same one that NGC slabbed with that same number, but that's really all they're good for. They're not good pictures of the coins. They're not like the PCGS True View pictures.

I've said for years that NGC images are lousy.

While searching coins on ebay, I often looked up their numbers on the NGC site. The coin photos were always similar to yours. Hard to tell anything by their pictures.

Okay thanks. I've never looked up NGC slabs prior to this and didn't even know they imaged them until I submitted. I posted this in hopes that others won't make the same mistake. I'm glad I didn't send in 10 or 20 coins... that would have really added up.

I have seen some of PCGS's images and theirs are really nice looking and as far as I know unlike NGC if you do not pay for imaging there will be no picture of the coin on cert lookup. I actually applaud NGC for taking pictures of each coin submitted because it does help identify fake slabs, but I have to disagree with their imaging service that they charge people because even their high resolution pictures are very pitiful as far as images go
