After seeing a few pic of slabbed and graded coins I'm just wondering if dirt and grime matter when grading as it appears it doesn't and I thought it would have but it must all be based on the detail alone, would I be right in my assumptions..thoughts please any one

Dirt and grime do matter.
But as far as grading the coin on its wear that is another matter indeed.

Most dirt and grime can be removed very easily and it isn't visible. Its not cleaning in the way people get all worried about. Simply removing loose grime. Olive oil and a cotton bud can remove most crap from copper coins without leaving any sign what so ever.

I havent tried it on anything else but it is great on copper coins. Just don't rub too hard with the cotton. Very gently does the trick. I will post before and after pics later. Several coin dealers I have spoken to recommend it. As always stay clear of overly valuable coins though.

I haven't got any dirty silver lying around. It couldn't hurt it.

I've been wanting to clean up ( Neutralise ) the verdigris on this coin for a while so I've just put it in some olive oil to soak for a day or 2,will take another pic in a couple of days, hopefully the V will spread no more.

appleangel, I don't think your Crown has verdigris on it, it does look like it's got PVC green residue on it though. I've got a couple hundred NZ threepences with PVC residue

Olive oil probably won't hurt it, but probably won't help either if it's from PVC. You'll most likely need a solvent to get it off, such as acetone, but there may be surface damage when the residue is removed, although it's in the very early stage in my opinion and you may be lucky.

Food for thought..this is what I mean about the suggestiveness of coins and different peoples opinions..is one right and if so who And how do we really grade coins..I'd really like to know as I feel this is the first and most important step of coin collecting What's the point in paying for and thinking you have a EF when others say it's F or what ever the case may be.

This is getting along the lines of my other question with grading both sides of a coin, please help me get out of this

gEF even with those scratches and ugly stains?

The stains don't change the grade of the coin, they only affect the eye appeal.

I went to an Adelaide dealer in the CBD last week and he pulled out all his better pre decimal copper for me. It was clear that more than one person had graded each one as the hand writing for different on each 2x2. The grades assigned were so varied it was funny. One would be labelled VF and was clearly better, another labelled at EF and was no where near it. Make your own mind up and be harsh to be safe.

Thanks enworb, this is what I'm talking about and why I've been asking for help but don't seem to be getting anywhere at the moment I'm trying to learn more because I'd like to go to Brisbane soon and have a look because there's not much around here and the markets don't have much either and seem quite dear so any help is greatly appreciated, thanks mate
