I have read on a forum somwhere where a member was saving all the 2005 nickels that they could find. I was curious as to why.

I have been looking for copper and I have found the 2009 are not prevelant in the number that I have been seeing any of the 2005 nickels.

Could the reason for saving the 2005 nickels is that this is year of the design change and that one of the minted designs has less mintage than the others (such as the 2009 presidency).

I am saving the nickels that I come accross in my daily change, but am just looking for a reason. Thanks..............

Not really sure what the reason was behind keeping the 2005s. Here are the mintage numbers...
American Bison
P 448,320,000
D 487,680,000

Ocean in View
P 394,080,000
D 411,120,000

As for the 2009s, I save any that I run across (unless they're trashed) because they're so darn hard to find in circulation. Here are the mintages for those...

P 39,840,000
D 46,800,000

Out of all the many nickels I've looked through (a lot!), I've never ran across a 2009D nickel. I had to buy one to complete my Dansco.

Ridge Runner,

Here in NW PA. I've found two 2009-D nickels this past year. I normally pick up five rolls of nickels every other day from the bank. I save all pre-1960 and of course the 2009's

the 2005 buffalo looks really nice but ill take an original buffalo instead, yea I can see why people would want them reminding everyone of the old buff nickel besides I see plenty of them just cant find the 2009!

That's interesting Radarcoin. Thanks for the info. I don't roll hunt, but I've been thinking about dabbling in it. I just look through pocket change. I only break dollars and save all change. I've been doing this for years. It accumulates fast. Then after I fill my jar, I sort through it. Then I cash that in and buy coins with it. It's a way to spend more money on coins without making it appear that I spend so much (don't tell my wife). I'll keep every one I find down here in Florida.

I have heard of some people hoarding the 2005 Bison nickel, because of the design, hoping that it'll go up in value over time.

I suspect that because of the hoarding there will be plenty of high grade examples to keep the prices down.

Nope, the Westward Series "design change" started in 2004 not 2005. It ended in 2006, with this being the design going forward that we have now.

There is no reason to "hoard" the 2005 Nickel whatsoever.

The 2009, though, can be a valid hoard subject.......arguably.

But I wouldn't understand the reason for 2005. Even liking the buffalo design, isn't a reason to "hoard" it.
Most people would "hoard" the ORIGINAL Buffalo nickel, LONG before they'd hoard the newer 2005 version.
And 2005 also has the "Ocean in View" design.......so are/were they hoarding just 2005 Nickels period ? ...including the Ocean View Nickel ?

I can see collecting the whole "Westward Series" issues (2004-2006)......by "roll" or by "album" or even by "folder".
But "hoarding" a particular one of these designs ? .......
I'd be mighty confused by that notion ! ...

Eaglefoot,

While roll searching, I've been "hoarding" the Westward Series as I come across them. Actually my final hoard will consist of a roll of each, P & D, and that will be it. I've completed rolls of the P and hopefully will complete the D soon, then I can concentrate on War Nickels and anything older than 1960.

Irrational attraction to the Buffalo nickel.

I have to admit though that I keep every one I find. I'm up to 2 now, both Philadelphia. Just got the second one last week.

That's why I have two bank boxes of 2005-D Bison Nickels.
I bought them in July 2005 at Wells Fargo for face value.

Numismatically true. But there are people who are hoarding any and all current Nickels
(for metal value, and in anticipation of a possible composition change in the near future),
so if you're hoarding Nickels anyway, why not have a few Bisons?

I remember when I was completing a couple folders of the Westward Series Nickels.
For the first one.......I just kept EVERY P OR D I came across (with roll searching too of course)
Then once my "stock" was decent enough to go through, that's what I did until the first folder was complete...then the second one.
This hoarding, for me, was just for the puropose of having the stock to put together my folders.

(And I have them Uncirculated and Proof in my Dansco of course too !) .....

So, the way I see it, for me anyway, was that I had the "Westward Series" covered pretty decently.
2 folders put together from circulation.
And the MS and Proof quality in the Dansco.
I didn't need anymore.
I then turned in all of my "stock" back to the bank.
Admittedly and for a brief time, I did consider keeping the '05 Buffalo's....and even a stock tube of each mint and each year in fair condition or better...... BUT "value-wise", or "future" value-wise....I just didn't see much here to warrant this.

Oh and I do have a couple U.S. Mint wrapped 2006 P&D Sets....(not sure why I bought them, but this was all the Mint had when I discovered their website late in '06 to early '07-----they had ZERO of the '04 & '05 rolls then.......and I missed out on the Lewis & Clark commem Sets and everything.....

And I will always keep a REALLY nice high grade "gem" found "in the wild" too.......no matter what kind of coin.

But for me to actually "hoard" something or a certain Ultra Modern coin.....I'd have to REALLY believe that someday the efforts/costs of my stocking process would pay dividends that would be WORTH THE EFFORT ! ....or my excitement is short-lived.

I do not have the patience or the interest in Epaying out various rolls and singles all over North America every other day......that's just too "busy" for me.
OR dealing with dozens and dozens of different emails daily.
And all only for a modest to tiny profit....I just don't enjoy doing that at all !
And by NOT keeping them (or others in the same fashion), it saves me on the cost of coin tubes too ! ....

I know the 2009's are a low mintage, but what exactly are the mintage figures for the 08's and 10's for comparison?

08 totals over 600,000
10 totals over 500,000

Are those numbers in addition to the 2009 amounts? They seem kinda low and figure the 08's and 10's to be in the hundred millions.
