I was thinking of bidding on this coin but quickly reconsidered. Aside from being harshly cleaned the S just doesn't look right. To me it appears that the area around the S was hollowed out and the S was placed on top of the hollowed out portion. Being Canadian I don't really have enough experience with US coins to say for sure one way or another. It's just a gut feeling that all is not well with this coin. Are there any diagnostics I could refer to or any opinions from the resident specialists? By the way, the seller is offering a money back guarantee but I don't want the bother of buying it just to have the hassle of sending it back again. Anyways I hope I'm wrong. I don't know much about quarters at all, but I agree, that doesn't look right.

I just did some research. After comparing pictures side by side of a genuine 1932-S and the ebay quarter, I'm convinced the one on ebay is a counterfeit. Not only is the S different (serifs on the real one and none on the ebay quarter) and in a slightly different location (higher on the real one) but the second "R" in "QUARTER" is completely different. There are other differences in the lettering of "QUARTER DOLLAR" as well but to me the second R is the one that is most obvious. http://www.coinpage.com/large.php?tImageId=2655Edited by Peter4805

The mint marks very in location- so that's not a dead give away. the coin doesn't look fake to me- just cleaned to the point where I don't know why you'd want this particular one.

Not to belabor the point but apparently all genuine 1932-S quarters have a die crack running horizontally through the "BUS" in "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and another die crack which runs from the back of the eagles head to the wing. Sure enough the real 1932-S had both of these die cracks while the ebay quarter had neither. http://www.cointalk.com/t50503/Now I am 100% convinced. |

She has it for sale again! This time I wrote her a note pointing out all the diagnostics that are way off for that coin. I'll see what she does about it.

Why would you want that coin even if it was authentic? For that kinda money you can get a nice one-slabbed too!

Right. Even if it was real it would still be a lemon and it took me all of three seconds to come to that conclusion. At this point I'm just hoping no one else gets stuck with it.

"Lightly cleaned"? My big toe. I wouldn't be surprised if it were a carved or cast counterfeit that was pocketized and scrubbed to hide it.
I also notice how Miss Annie's listings are a bit... "flirtatious." :-)
Too many red flags.
