Any idea if there's any significance to this?

Still have no clue. I am guessing that you can not ask your father? Could it be a value?,$6-$8. Maybe he thought that's what they were worth at one time.

I would look close ot the motto on the Kennedy halves. There are a lot of doubled dies on this area.

I checked both coins, both sides at 10x and 30x and dont see anything unusual...including anything resembling CONECA's descriptions of the numerous varieties.

Thanks, all...I wonder if those coins were worth $6 - $8 back in the 60's. Today, melt and numismatic value is about $5...that said, I'd be hard pressed to think they were worth 6 - 8 dollars back then or any other time except last year when silver went above $48/oz.
