Is there a consensus about the order of productivity of roll hunting by type of coin, ie pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars. Which is most productive? Which is least productive?

From everything I've read (I'm a newbie who wondered the same question you did), it's:

Halves > Dimes > Nickels > Quarters

When it comes to silver.

I don't know how you'd put pennies into that category as it's a whole different game, in my opinion.

You do find more wheat pennies than you do silver in any category, but the reward is relative.

I agree but I think halves depend on location too. I say this from reading the half dollar forum where folks are always finding either nothing, miniscule amounts or rarely jack pots.
But I agree with the first post.

I totally agree, halves are very hit and miss, either you just hit a jackpot or just suffer several skunks in a row. Dimes are more consistent producers,as I can guarantee you with at least 1 silver dime per box. There's quite some variety in searching dimes too!

most dollar value of silver - halves. Halves are also easy to sort through quickly (time per $1 sort).

While I've found silver in dimes, I've also found my fair share of other junk and mis counted bags - so I'm probably closer to even on that. -- haven't tried boxes.

Nickels can be fun when you find war, buffalo, v etc

i enjoy nickels and dimes as well takes more time to do, halves are definately hit or miss I'm on a pretty bad streak right now with halves, so I expanded my horizons into dimes nickels and sometimes quarters
