I just stumbled onto this auction as it ended: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1944-PCGS-M...em1c2468da32

I have never seen a 'doily' pcgs slabbed coin. Are these coins vastly undergraded? It grades MS66, and looks to be high MS based on the pictures...Though it sold for $140 - $100 over fair market value (FMV for this coin is ~$38).

Did PCGS grade for the FSB designation back in 1989/90?

I know that the doiley holders are fairly rare. Most likely realized this price because of it. Some people collect slabs from each generation so that may be the reason for the inflated price.

yeah doiley holders are very collectible, they didn't make them very long and every time you see one you can pretty much throw any value guide out the window because it doesn't matter what coin is in the holder, the collectors want the slab. This is about the only case I know of where the slab is usually worth more than most of the coins in them

He bought both - $40 for the coin and $100 for the slab.

Yes they did, I have Rattlers with FB and I am trying to put the Mercury dime short set together with that.

This sounds like the tail wagging the dog, but if some people are into slabs, hey, that's their thing.

people have been brainwashed into believing that if a coin is raw there is something wrong wih it, in reality, there are those that take the time to learn about what they collect and probably know MUCH more about what they collect than two of the top three TPG's and thus dont need their coins "validated" by 3 cents worth of plastic

Yes, the doily labels are sought after by slab collectors due to their rarity. I sold my PCGS doily label sample slab on ebay last year for ~$60, it contained a $3 silver Roosy dime and I had originally purchased it for ~$5
