Celtic - Sorry, it really can't be explained in a couple of sentences. The definitions and "tells" vary by both series and denominations.
But you will love the book for many other reasons!

So it's similar (in concept at least) to WAMs in certain LMCs, but these can be better tracked, perhaps, or at least better positively ID'ed due to plate number. But what's actually narrow? The numerals? The "703" almost looks italicized compared to the "632" in the photo above, but that doesn't make it narrow. Hmmm.... Oh wait, I think I see it. The width of the dark swooshies in the design under the plate number is.... um, narrower... on the 703. Ah-HA! I can see why you referred to this as "esoteric", Coinfrog! I'm not sure how the "Standard Guide" will describe it but I bet they won't use the term "swooshies".  Edited by CelticKnot

One final question on the "narrow" thing... are the 1934D $20s the only notes that exhibit this narrow feature?

No, such distinctions appear on different denominations from different series, and their "tells" vary considerably.
