nice coin: and, the year of Culloden.

DECVS ET TVTAMEN - common inscription on British coins, used as recently as 2008 -

"Edge inscription: DECUS ET TUTAMEN ("An ornament and a safeguard" -- originally on 17th century coins, this refers to the inscribed edge as a protection against the clipping of precious metal. The original appearance of the phrase is attributed to an epic poem by Virgil--"viro decus et tutamen in armis" (Aeneid, Book V, L. 262), describing a piece of armour, a breast-plate interwoven with gold, which was awarded as a prize to Mnestheus.) ..." from -

ANNO REGNI DECIMO NONO = 19th year of the reign
- Geo2 ascended on 11 June 1727 (O.S.)

I have a 1746 in about the same condition, but with a mount mark removed from the edge. The one of the four crowns is slightly affected, and their is a small bit of obvious disturbance on the edge. Paid $65 for it, which in retrospect was about the right price.

Peter, 2009 and 2010 Shield 1 Pound coins still have the "Decus Et Tutamen" motto on their edge.

Oh that's pretty cool! Thanks for the info Peter. I have another question that I forgot to mention: What do the roses on the reverse represent, if anything?

They're the British ruling house Tudor House's roses. They're also depicted in many other pre-decimal British coins like Elizabeth II Sixpences.

The Tudor Rose is present as an element of the design on many British coins, and it is a centerpiece feature on the modern 20 pence coin,

What a half crown would buy you in London in the mid 1700's:
2s 6d (2/6)
A whole pig.
A tooth extraction
Dinner sent in from a tavern
A chicken at Vauxhall gardens
A ticket to hear the rehearsal of Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks at Vauxhall

Thanks Arrows! This is my first 18th century half crown ( I also have an 1887 half crown). I am very pleased with it.
