I found an older nickel yesrerday that look like it had a delamination (I'll post pictures later today). I could still see the devices (in this case letters) underneath the removed layer. Is this normal?

Yes, the details do transfer down into the coin so if a layer delaminates off it is quite possible to still have the details showing.

The devices can be strong in the delamination if it happened before the coin was struck. But weaker is normal.

I would day the lamination peeled away after being struck, note the two fold over pieces.
