I have a coin graded at MS-66 by a third leg grading company. I want to get it regraded to ensure that it is in that grade, but I am worried that they will grade it a point lower or even more because that would drastically change the value of the coin.. Any advice?

toCCF. There are alot of opinions you could get on your topic. However, Quote:Topic Titles (7/3/2007) The title of your topic is very important. Let's say you need help attributing an 1896 Morgan dollar.... Bad: Need help with coin Better: Need help with Morgan dollarGood: Need help with 1896 Morgan dollarAwesome: Need help with VAM on 1896 Morgan dollarThis enables the members with expertise pertaining to your question to easily find and answer your question. The title of the topic also becomes the title of the topic's web page, which enables us to attract more collectors to the site. The more members we have, the more we learn. I would make a fifth category for your title: Very Bad In regard to your question...buy the coin and not the slab. If you can grade reasonably well you can avoid this situation most of the time.

If the top-tier TPGs would grade it significantly lower, then the value of the coin is already much lower than MS-66 value, regardless of what's written on the holder.

My problem is, I don't want it to be worth less than that.. obviously. Haha But if it isn't worth a grade MS-66, I would definitely feel awful selling the coin as is graded. By the way, it is a 1890 Morgan dollar.

Yep, it's not a real TPG. The probability of the coin receiving the same or higher grade from a reputable TPG is virtually zero. Without seeing a pic and just going off the experience others have had with basement slabbers, you'll be lucky if it comes back MS at all. Most likely, it's been cleaned and wouldn't receive a full grade.

Exactly as Sap stated. These 'basement' slabbers are usually one guy sitting in his garage, knows nothing about grading coins, but wanted to generate some income by creating something that sounds like PCGS, looks at the coin, and puts a ridiculous grade on a coin because it looks "nice". Many of these are simply XF-AU or have been cleaned.

Any advice? If I was you I would only buy what I could grade myself I would not rely on a third party grader, especially a basement grader. If you have a suspicion that this will grade at a lower grade you may be right. Crack the slab and put up pics so the experts in US coins here on this site can give you an honest and impartial grading on it is my best advice

That coin will never be a MS-66 from ANACS,NGC,PCGS, or ICG. The slab the coin is in right now is not a real company, it is a self slabber that puts fictional grades on the labels and hides behind the "grading is subjective" thing, saying one mans MS-66 is another mans XF but this just isn't really true with anyone that knows how to grade. one may grade the coin a point or maybe even 2 point differently but it would never be the spread these basement slabbers seem to try and make people think. The only thing that you have going for you is right now in that slab it is worth what a raw coin is actually worth as no one will pay anywhere close to what a MS-66 coin in a PCGS slab would be worth. So chances are if you did submit it to a reputable TPG it may increase its value over what it is now even in a lower grade, but we would need to know what type of coin it is and what date and pictures would be nice as well so we can give you some opinions on the actual grade to see if it is even worth submitting
