Well, the whole USPS is nuts but that's a different story. Everytime I go to this particular PO, and I want to send a coin International, I fill out the appropriate Customs form and instead of putting "numismatic item", she questioned me last time for that, this time, I put "souvenir". She tells me, "This is not an accurate description of what the contents are?" I sighed and told her, "medallion". Do any of you have these problems. Obviously I'm not putting coin. I've brought this up before and it drives me crazy, they question everything I put on the form! swcoin.ecrater.com

I'd explore other post offices, and reasons to make the detour. there have been other threads on how to complete those forms. It appears that a lot of thought goes into this. The answer that I like most is "Numary".

I have sent quite a few OTP (over the pond) and simply put "Numismatics" as the description, checked "gift" and placed an amount on the customs form. No problems.

Yeah, for some reason, this particular PO questions everything you put. I have another close by I will start using. They just stamp it and I'm on my way.

It's almost as bad as trying to figure out what to tell a bank teller when you're trying to get full boxes of pennies and what not. They always ask you what you're using them for...yeesh!

I'd like to write "clown costume" and ask her, "is this accurate enough?"

Processed metal samples?
The USPS rote is "Is there anything in here that's ... or potentially hazardous?"
"Lady, it's 70# of wheat cents, drop it on your foot and get back to me".

Some just give no trouble for no reason, I go to the PO 3 times a week, the clerk knows me there, and never gives me trouble. But a new clerk, gives me trouble. Even the old clerk told her to lay off, but she didn't.
She was fired her first week.
But hey, it happens.

I have had no drama's whatsoever with my post office. They are always polite and helpful. They did question me about " Numismatic items " once and when I explained that the item/items were coins for collecting all they said was No problem with that.

I don't understand why you would put "numismatics" on the form. Its the same thing as putting "COINS!" All it takes is a curious clerk(s) to look it up in the dictionary and the word could be spread. I used to do "hobby supplies" but a clerk told me that was too general and I agree. I now do "machine parts" and have had the most success with it so I use it (learned it from this forum).

I use hobby supplies and the guy who runs the post office in our rural village shop jokes about me sending out hobby supplies all of the time to the US, Canada, Australia, and various European countries. So far the only issue is how long it takes coins to arrive to places like Turkey when shipments which cross oceans arrive quicker.
Mever thought about using machine parts but have been tempted to write "round metal discs" on the customs if I have to use a post office in the town where I work since one guy made a stupid comment about hobby supplies when the postage cost was more than the declared value of the item (which is always the face value of the UK coins that I am sending while for foreign coins I guess at a value).

Sometimes I write "foreign coin" on the customs slip. I think most members of the public would associate "foreign coin" with worthless junk you might find in your pocket change.

I live in a small town and never have a problem with the clerks at our little Post Office. They are always friendly and helpful.
