Hi guys

Take a look at this 1986 Lincoln Penny...It has a double "I" and the bottom half of the "L" in Liberty is missing.

I'm going to guess and say it was caused by grease filled/on the die preventing the full L from being struck.

Thanks southsav

I am not to up on American coin faults, but that makes sense to me, but still doesn't explain the double "I" in Liberty.

Would a Grease Fill cause that to happen...?

Hi southsav

Does MD( Machine Doubling) mean the coin was struck twice...?

Read this, then save it as a Bookmark here. Hopefully I've done this correctly. If not, go to the the search box up top on CCF and search " Machine Doubling"

Die deterioration. Very common on zincolns. Causes a ridge of sorts parallel to the rim of the coin, and will often cause parts of the letter "L" to vanish. It also sometimes affects "In God We Trust" and the last number of the date. Die Deterioration is also what caused the so-called 1955 poor-mans doubled die. It's not actually "doubled" it just has that appearance due to a well worn out die.
