Every coin collector enjoys an upgrade to what they currently have in their collection, however, when do you stop upgrading? For example, assuming you can afford to do so; case scenario: "you have an MS-64 Canadian coin valued at $1,000.00. The next grade level (MS-65) is available for you to purchase, however, you have to spend $3,500.00 to purchase it." Do you make the buy or live with what you have? Glenn

Quote: Do you make the buy or live with what you have? Well, in my case I probably couldn't afford either one so, I will do it this way. If I have a VF-25 coin at $40.00 and one came up AU-50 for $125.00 I would probably go for it.

I'm more at the stage to fill the gaps, mainly in the Victoria era. But I'm upgrading the most recent coins mainly the silver ones. But if I find any AU or MS under 50$, I usually go for it if I can afford it.

I think that all depends on indviduals financial situation. Some of us are fortunate enough to be able to upgrade and with some it may be a pipe dream.

Over the years I've learned to buy coins that I won't have to upgrade. That doesn't mean I have a collection of MS70 coins though! I'm currently working on a Victoria type set in MS and believe me, I'll have to save up for quite some time to be able to get the coins I want! As always, I try to find coins that are high end for their grade.

I always start a collection with my budget in mind, any series I collect must be one I can complete within x number of years within the budget I have set.I also have a budget for upgrades to previous sets.Any money I make from flipping coins or selling sets that no longer interest me goes towards upgrades or impulse buys.Even if I won the lottery I'd still have a plan.

I would have to say that is nutz unless you have too much money & don't know what to do with it all.

If it was a good price for the coin I might consider it. IE it lists @ $5k+. Otherwise no.

I guess I would ask myself if this upgrade would at the least hold its value and at best increase in value in the next few years. But if money is not an issue then I'd say what ever floats your boat.

would upgrade in a jiffy IF the coin in question would also be one of the low mintage issues. otherwise most others will sooner or later come around. the low mintage issues are a very lucrative investment... better than banks.. BUT Glenn... you forgot to note ICCS only... right? or does ICG and NNC also count?
