hi. new to coin collecting and the forum, so please tell me if I'm asking a silly question! why are 1968 2cent coins more valuable than 1969 2c if there was a lower mintage in 69?

also a 2nd question - I read that 2010 5c are "scarce" similar to 1972, yet I seem to come across them quite often in change. why is the 2010 deemed scarce? I cant seem to find the mintage figures for them either

thanks

The 1968 coppers are scarce but I have no idea about the 2010 5 cent coins, No worries an expert will be along shortly.
Once again welcome to the forum.

I think it would be safe to assume that you read this on ebay, and it was written by someone selling them...

Mintage figures for these are 55.757 million, so while lower than most recent years, not low by historical standards, and as you have noticed they are gradually becoming more widespread in circulation.

The only thing I can think of for the 2c is that 1968 there was no mint sets. In 1969 there was. That means it is much more likely that there are 1969 UNC coins floating around. Searching through 2c lots for 1968 is much easier than looking for 1972 5c. The 5c is much scarcer in my opinion. As for the 2010 5c its not scarce, not at all.

I think we would all like to know about the 1968/1969 2c question. My theory is that the Perth Mint made the 1968 ones and the quality was poor and many dealers just threw them in the bulk bucket. So there are less 1968 coins of good quality.Canberra minted the 1969 and the quality is much better. Too early to get excited about the 2010 5c as the mint's vaults are probably full of them and haven't been released totally yet.

spot on enworb
Its relatively easy to get a 1969 2c because there is one in every 1969 mint set.

As for the 2010 5c, I think that is just ebay marketing spin by dodgy sellers.

When they first appeared 2010 5c were not easy to find.
It seems like they released some, then did not release more for some time, then released heaps more.

1968 2c coins are rare simply becuase they were not released in mint sets. Lower grades in my opinion do not command some of the price they are getting on ebay but higher grades certainly do as only available in UNC through rolls
2010 5c are not scarce at all....you will soon see their prices drop as they are readily available in change thesedays

Are they actually getting anything more than 5c at the moment? They are common as in Adelaide. I guarantee I could get $100 and find over a dollar of 2010 5c
