Hi all,

I collect bank notes, not coins, but I recently came across this coin after an old friend passed away. I have found examples of rupees that have the same front side, but the reverse side isn't present on this one...it's like it was just stamped. Anyone know what it is, when or where it would be from, or approximate value? Any info is appreciated, thanks...please see photo.

It's a kind of mint error known as a "brockage", where a coin gets stuck in the dies and a second coin is struck in between. The Indian mints seem to have been particularly prone to this error; see this thread for examples of other Indian rupee brockages.

You might want to check the weight; a brockage would weigh the same as a normal rupee.

It seems that brockages of late Victorian, Edwardian and early George V Indian rupees turn up often enough. I have an example of George V.

All of the examples I have seen have 100% registration, and all are obverse brockages.

Cool, thanks for the info. Any idea of approximate value? I thought I might take it to the local coin shop tomorrow just to see what they can tell me.

It does not look like a coin to me. The legend around the king's head is not correct. I suspect it is more some kind of commemorative medal.

For a coin the legend around the head would be something like:
EDWARDVS VII DEI GRA: BRITT OMN: REX
(Edward 7th, by the grace of God, of all the Britons, king)

Some coins will include FID DEF ( defender of the faith ) and IND IMP ( Emperor of India ), depending on which coin it is.

Anaximander, it's an Indian rupee, that is why it's not the same as a British or Canadian coin.
