Thought I'd post a couple of images of my favorite coin from Mexico -- the Caballito Peso! The coin was originally planned as a commemorative to mark the 100th anniversary of Father Hidalgo's speech that served as a catalyst for Mexico's revolt against Spain. Interestingly, the coin was initially considered as a 50 Centavos piece, but ultimately wound up as a One Peso. The coin was struck from 1910 through 1914. The reverse of the coin features Lady Liberty on horseback with the sun's rays behind her. It was the reverse side that gave rise to the "Caballito" nickname for the coin; "cabillito" is Spanish for "horse." The obverse features an updated Mexican coat of arms. The coin presented is a brilliant coin with outstanding cartwheel luster -- the scanned images do not do the coin justice. The golden toning around the coin's edge makes for a wonderful framing of the design. Enjoy! 1910 Caballito Peso - Reverse 1910 Caballito Peso - Reverse / Large 1910 Caballito Peso - Obverse / Large Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved.

What an amazing and clean design. It's very appealing to the eye. (Nice toning, too!)

One of the most beautiful coins in the world!
Awesome coin you have there commems!
I love these because they represent the end of an era. The 1910-1914 caballitos were the last 8 Reales sized coins struck in Mexico at the .7859 ASW and .903 fine standard that had existed since the spanish colonial days unless we count the 1949 (1898 peso) restrike.
My goal is to obtain the full set in at least a AU grade.

RealPeso: I wish you the best with building your set -- it will be a great looking set once done! I've always tended to be a "first year type" kind of collector, so the 1910 made sense for me. Also, as someone who likes commemorative coins, the 1910 also works as a centennial commem for my collection.

Such a gorgeous coin.
May I ask how much (or the range) you paid for it?

Quote: May I ask how much (or the range) you paid for it? I'd rather not go into specifics, but my experiences suggest you should expect prices in the $400+ range if you're looking for a true, no compromise Choice to Gem Uncirculated piece with nice eye appeal. I've seen a number priced below this level, but each one I examined had one or more problems or showed signs of wear (i.e., was really a Choice AU coin being touted as Uncirculated).
