LTMets44 Pillar of the Community United States 580 Posts	Posted 03/19/2012 10:08 am I have heard about the Jefferson Black Beauty and I'm trying to find out more information on it. Was it only a certian year? How can you tell if your nickel is a black beauty. The reason I ask is because I received a nickel in my change yesterday that was very black. I am not sure if it is just environmental discoloration or could it be a black beauty. I will try to post pictures up later. Thank you for your help. By the way, it is a 1964. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 03/19/2012 1:21 pm The coin may have been burned and left outside for some time. The crusted surface over the faces tell me that. Then it was circulated for a time and the rims started getting the color back to them. Just a step child coin in circulation. Thanks for the images. That helps a lot. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 03/19/2012 1:32 pm When I was in school I bought a 1867 cent from a boy in school. I liked the coin, but a copper cent with the same color as your coin wasn't all that desireable to me then. So I did the dip thing (unknown to me that it would ruin the coin at the time) and the outside surface flaked off the coin and turned it pink. So I learned then NOT to try to alter dark coins. Find a common cent that is black/extremly dark and dip them and see what happens. Best to leave them alone. Report this Post to the Staff
