i have a 1951 d penny that has a filled in bottom portion of the five has anybody come across this before? and do you know what its value might be?

without a photo image - this is only a guess. die chips are responsible for many of the devices - filled with a "blob". these seem common through the 50's. they add little or no value to the coin, however I keep most of them because I find them interesting and fun to find.

From your description I agree with drablec. Die chips are common with cents in the 50's and they aren't really worth anything, but their nice conversation pieces and you can teach others with it.
