I have a 1943 S steel penny with a very faint "4" and it looks like the mint mark is either a doubling of the S, an S over D, or D over S. My understanding from others' posts and replies is that there is no such thing as a doubled die for this coin. Can someone tell me about my coin?
Thanks in advance.

That is die wear. remember this year was using steel planchets with steel dies. The die wear is more noticed because of the same metals being used. At least with copper it was malleable. Note the L on LIBERTY. It is also weaking toward the rim. Just a hazzard for that year. Happens a lot.

Thanks coop! Would the worn die cause the mint mark and date to appear shifted and to look as if it was stamped twice?

Die wear equal on both devices. If it were a doubled die the mint mark would not be in the same direction. If it was a RPM the die would not be in the same direction as the date. Catch 22. The die was showing wear on both devices.

Coop - Given this is die wear, what is the value of this coin relative to the published prices for this grade? In other words, does this type of error add value?

It's not an error just a worn die. Some call it damage. It's hurts the value.

Some may view it as a collecable. But give me a uncirculated ealier die state coin and that makes me happier.
This one isn't mine, but they are nicest when they look like this one:

A circulated one like yours 50 cents and up.
