Which penny is the rarest of all in Wide AM, 1998, 1999 or 2000 ? I found two 2000 WAM, so they must not be that rare if I found them!

1999 is the least common.

Congrats on the nice finds!
Rarest to more common are 1999, 2000, and then 1998. They are all worth saving though.

The thinking used to be that the 1998 was tougher to find than the 2000. Many people, including myself, have found more 1998s than 2000s. Of course finding a 1998 & 2000 like these is a bummer.

Hello, What actually happened back when the the mint produced the wide AMs for these years? In other words was a Wide AM run of coins discovered and then intentionally stopped because it was out of tolerance? Or did the wide AMs periodically and randomly occur as a result of non predictable die manufacturing? I was just wondering if anyone knew the history of this particular variety...1-Confused

The Wide AM style was used on proofs. Apparently, somehow a few business strike dies were made with the hub intended for proof dies. There are also " Close AM" versions of proofs for 1998 and 1999 (the normal would be Wide AM), and a rare Close AM version of 1992 and 1992-D. Normal 1992 and prior had a Wide AM, but a small number of 1992 cents were struck with 1993 style reverses.

Crap, I wrote out this long reply then click. Was not logged on. :) Short version: No one knows as yet which yr. is the scarcest. Maybe the 98 got a late punch start during the yr. ? The 2000 would be a logical choice as the mint had already ran 2 yrs. of coins without detecting the problem. Maybe looking at all 3 yrs. total mintage figures would be a start. Then figure the % of reported finds for ea. yr. etc. Depends where the coins went also. I have found a half dozen 2000 but no 98 or 99. I live in Mass. Home of the first 92-P close A.M. I actually was lucky enough to have seen it raw in hand the day it was brought in to a local dealer.

Oh well, not much of a clue in the total mintage figures. 98-P 5 mil. 99-P 5.2 2000-P 5.5 Call the mint. Get some answers here.

This may answer what you are after.... "Here is what Wexler has: 1992-D CAM -1 Die Pair Listing Note: (Crawford has 2 Die Pairs Listed) 1998 WAM - 29 Die Pairs Listed 1999 WAM - 4 Die Pairs Listed 2000 WAM - 23 Die Pairs Listed" As you can see the 99 is scarcer, after the 92s of course
