I've seen a lot of damaged nickels, but I think this one was struck through cloth.

If enough force had been applied post-mint to create the deformations on the obverse, you'd expect a lot of damage on the reverse as well, particularly the rim and the high points. The only non-circulation mark on the reverse is in the field, and it looks like a strike-through also.

You can also see design details that would have been obliterated by PMD, like in part of the legends and the lip area.

It looks to me like a piece of cloth somehow got between the dies, and it got pulverized by repeated strikes until it was left with this ragged edge. The scattered depressions on both sides would be little fragments of the cloth.

Agree? Disagree?
Rest in Peace

I suppose you are right. I'm no expert but it does look like cheese-cloth left that mark. Do they use rags on the dies?

If the planchet was flawed with those marks, would it come out looking like your coin or would that be different?

It is interesting.

It does look like a genuine struck through cloth error. You can see the rim at 9-12 oclock.
Most struck through cloth errors that I have seen have been more consistant, covering all or most of the face where yours is more broken up.
Very cool coin!

Some poor mint worker probably had a nickel-sized hole taken out of their sleeve. :-)

The press bites back!

On a goofier note, I'd call this one "Fire-Breathing Jefferson." :-)

Any ballpark idea on value on these? They seem to be scarce; I haven't been able to find many completed auctions for this kind of error, and all the ones I did find were MS examples that were 100% struck through or close to it.

I agree that this was struck through cloth. Since the affected area is relatively small, it would probably sell in the $50 to $75 range.
